Situated only 600 mt from the seaside, in the modern, residential zone of Castro, the complex is composed of 9 housing units. Castro Populated since the prehistoric age ( Zinzulusa and Romanelli caverns), Castro was first habited by Messapians and Greeks, to then become a Roman colony, called Castrum Minervae (Latin for “Minerva’s castle”) in 123 b.C. After the partition of the Roman Empire, Castro became a Byzantium property and, in spite of numerous attacks, it turned into a florid commercial and military centre. The glowing period continued also after the Arab conquest, but unfortunately the Medieval period was not so booming. After numerous pirates attacks the town was essentially destroyed and noble families and bishops left Castro for other, more secure locations. Today Castro is a florid location once again, mainly thanks to tourism and craftsmanship. The old town, located over a hill, is a beautiful example of an antique town (borgo), with a castle and walls in perfect conditions. Strolling through the borgo’s narrow streets, you can still find some traces of the Castro’s antique history, like The Minevra’s Temple or remains of the byzantine cathedral. Castro is now a vivid, touristic centre, which each year seduces more visitors, thanks to its crystal-clear water (Bandiera Blu 2016 award) and the unique atmosphere of its old town.
